The majority of depictions of war in the books are raiders, ruined towns, and scared villagers dealing with lawless soldiers/bandits.

The westeros armies are described as fairly generic with knights and basic footmen/archers. Danarys military is basically dragons, spearmen, and horsemen. The unsullied are literally just spearmen who donвЂ™t flee. Dothraki in the books are just horsemen who canвЂ™t lay siege but ask for tribute to go away. The militaries are not very well explained or diversified. After that they are decided by surprise events like wildfire trapping ships, Stannis randomly saving the day for the Nights Watch, or mercenaries who backstab their original buyers to help Danerys. The books have one like two battles in book 1 that could be played out. Game of thrones was never about the battles.
